Longwood Gardens

South of Philadelphia, in the rolling hills of the historic Brandywine Valley lies Longwood Gardens, the legacy country estate and gardens of Pierre S. du Pont. After a century of evolution and growth, Longwood Gardens identified the need for a coherent master plan to position itself as a one of the great gardens of the world. Working under the lead design of West8 Landscape Architects, Sherwood collaborated on the development of a 40-year master plan. Our role was to identify opportunities in the existing landform, ecology and infrastructure systems to restore natural patterns, capitalize on environmental stewardship, and enhance the historic infrastructure systems. Given these opportunities, we collaborated with the design team to integrate strategies ranging from energy conservation and water reuse to natural stormwater management and ecological restoration.
