Sherwood was commissioned by the City of Atlanta to develop a masterplan for the city’s largest and most progressive park. This 280-acre parcel is one of the city’s most unique properties, consisting of a historic old growth forest, an 80-acre decommissioned granite quarry, and topography that allows views of the entire Atlanta skyline. Creating a plan that respects the site’s history, responds to the neighborhood’s needs, and works to restore and compliment the site’s natural features was the ultimate goal. Sherwood’s work to understand and covey the importance of the site’s history and natural features along with associated regional and site mapping have been instrumental in defining an ecological framework for the park. This framework ultimately resulted in the concept of a ‘green spine’ which aligns site access, stormwater conveyance and ecology along a linear corridor that stretches from the highest point on the site to Proctor Creek. This corridor acts as the backbone for future park development zones and opportunity. Along its path constructed wetlands, art sculpture gardens and canopy walks provide a unique experience grounded in natural systems, that will help to ensure a sustainable and resilient approach for the future of the park.
