Maika Nicholson

PE | Senior Project Engineer

Maika Nicholson has over eight years of consulting civil engineering experience, and serves as Design Engineer on many of Sherwood’s high-profile projects. She has worked on a variety of projects from planning through construction phases. Her project work includes large residential developments, planning and code development, public right-of-way and complete streets design, and civil design work for institutional, parks and open-space projects. At Sherwood, Maika has specialized in infrastructure and water resources planning and green infrastructure design, focusing specifically on developing natural drainage system and green infrastructure design solutions, including elements such as biofiltration, porous pavements, green roofs and rainwater harvesting. Maika enjoys university campus projects, as they give her the opportunity to explore the interaction between infrastructure, scholarship and research. In addition, work in varying climates and cultures presents new and unique challenges. One project where these two components were in symbiosis was the University of Hawaii Manoa Infrastructure Master Plan, where she was able to apply Hawaiian integrated resource management practices (“ahupua’a”) and include a traditional water conveyance channel (“auwai”) in the design.

Fun Facts: Maika is an avid soccer player, and fan, having played soccer (football!) professionally in England for Chelsea Ladies F.C. for a year. She has also attended two world cups (Germany and South Africa) with plans to attend many more. Maika loves to travel and has lived abroad in five countries in Europe and Africa; traveling to over 20!
