Project: Rivington Residence

Rivington Street Residence

Location: New York, New York

For a new condo project in the Lower East Side, Sherwood was retained by the owner of the building to design a residential rainwater harvesting system with a very extensive roof garden. Sherwood designed a system that diverts stormwater runoff from the roof into a series of tanks located in the basement of the apartment building, thereby bypassing the combined sewer except in the largest of storms. This helps alleviate flooding in the basement, provides a water source for irrigation during summer months, and supplies non-potable water for flushing year round.  Sherwood also assisted the client in coordinating with New York City agencies to permit reusing the stored rainwater for residential non-potable demands in the building’s rental apartments.
