Boeddecker Park

Location: San Francisco, California

Working closely with the Trust for Public Land and WRNS Studio, Sherwood helped shaped the redesign of this urban park in the heart of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, an area with many families that is  dramatically underserved by open space. The new park will reduce water consumption and pollution by both infiltrating and harvesting rainwater on site with permeable paving, bioswales and a rainwater cistern designed to supply a low-flow irrigation system. Redesigning the park to include play areas for children and outdoor fitness machines for adults as well as a walking loop encourages outdoor activities for all ages and decreases the number of children having to leave the neighborhood for recreational activities. With interpretive signs to describe the water and energy conservation stories in the park the project will increase users’ understanding of the natural environment. This project is pursuing Sustainable SITES initiative.
