About this Project

In the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn NY, on a former paved parking lot, lays the City’s first Edible Schoolyard at P.S. 216. Sherwood Design Engineers, in collaboration with Work Architecture, completed the stormwater management and grading design for the recently completed first phase of this project. The world-renowned Edible Schoolyard program was established in Berkeley, California by Alice Waters, acclaimed chef and author, and pioneer of local, seasonal organic cooking. Sherwood’s consultation included support for surveying and geotechnical data acquisition in conformance with SCA standards, stormwater and site design coordination with the DEP, DOT and SCA, and construction administration support. Edible Schoolyard NYC partners with public schools to engage children in learning that makes the connection between food, health, and how the Earth sustains us; cultivating the knowledge, skills, and environment required to change the way children eat for life.
